LoraWan communication module for M5Stack with serial interface

This COM.LoRaWAN is a LoRaWAN communication module for M5Stack. It supports node-to-node or LoRaWAN communication. The LoRa defines the lower physical layer whereas the LoraWAN defines the upper networking layer (not handled by LoRa himself).

This module based on on the ASR6501 encapsulating a PSoC4000 and SX1262 chips. So it supports the 868MHz frequency band with ultra-low power design and consumes very low current in deep sleep mode (3.5μA).

This is an UART (serial port) based module, the reason why is is named "COM.". It is designed with DIP switches are used to configure the pinout used for the hardware serial port. The user program only needs to switch the ON pin as needed and specify the communication pins in the program.

A DC power socket is available under the module so it can be powered by an external power supply. The external antenna is also  there to improve the signal quality.

This module is great for remote low-power transmission application requiring ultra-low power consumption.

Such module can be used to automate Home building, Remote system, metering/counter acquisition.

About LoraWan

LoRaWAN has been developped by the LoRa Alliance to define the upper layers of a network based on LoRa. LoRaWAN is a media access control (MAC) layer protocol but acts mainly as a network layer protocol. LoRaWAN manages the communication between LPWAN gateways (LP stand for Low Power) and end-node devices. It act as a routing protocol (as the TCP does in the TCP/IP). You can upgrade your work with a LoRa / LoRaWAN radio, so it can communicate over very long distances and extremely low power consuming.

Interfacing the LoRaWAN module

The COM.LoRaWAN use a serial port @ 115200 bauds, 1 stop bit, 8 data bit, no parity bit (the so standardized 8N1)

The COM.LoRaWAN RXD/TXD pins can be connected to M5Stack UART with the DIP switch:

  • TX: 0, 13, 17
  • RX: 5, 15, 16
Please note that M5Stack Fire have the GPIOs 16 & 17 connected to PSRAM (by default).

The DIP switch on the right is invalid for the LoRaWAN module, no need to set.
