DRV8871 - 3.6A Single motor driver breakout with PWM and Current limiting

The DRV8871 motor driver is breakout board for controlling a power motor. This controller comes with useful specs making it suitable for a large variety of mechatronics and robotics projects. The DRV8871 brings PWM support and current limiting (with a single resistor) making it easy to use with brushed DC motor.

The DRV8871 offers great specs:

  • 6.5V to 45V motor power voltage
  • 3.6 Amps peak current
  • 2.0 Amps current limiting (pre-configured)
  • 3.3V and 5.5V logic (on IN pins).
  • PWM control
  • Current limiting regulation (without an inline sense resistor)
  • Under-voltage protection (lockout)
  • Over-current protection
  • Thermal shutdown

Using the DRV8871 is simple:

  • Connect the motor on OUT terminals.
  • Connect Power (6.5-45VDC) on VMotor terminals
  • Connects the control signals on IN1 and IN2 (you can feed PWM on input).

The current limiting is configured with an external resistor Rlim.
Adafruit placed a 30K resistor to set the current limiting to ~2A.
The resistor can be changes to adjust the current limiting to your specific needs.

For each order, you will receive the board fully assembled and tested. The board is fitted with 2 pre-soldered terminals. A pinHeader is joined to the product (if you want to use it on a breadboard).

You will need to use an iron to solder  the pinHeader on the board. This should takes few minutes and requires basic soldering skills.
