Load Cell / Strain Gauge for 5 KG

Load Cell or strain gauge are sensor able to measure the strain or the force applied to him. The strain gauge is made of a piece of metal designed and machined such a way it can be slightly deformed when some force is applied to it.
The strain-gauge is fitted with a flexible insulating containing a metallic foil pattern acting as a variable resistor.
When a force is applied then the gauge is deformed and deform the resistor foil. That results is a small change of the foil resistance. As the foil resistance is part of a Wheastone bridge (wikipedia), the output voltage will change with the deformation of the strain gauge.

However, these thin foils resistor are very delicate and are easy to over-bend. The force must be applied to the designed position and must stay in the calculated range of the strain gauge.

This product is made of strong aluminum part keeping the strain gauge from being damaged. It also constrains the amount of movement.

To use this device, you must attach one side to a fixed enclosure thanks to the mounting holes (it will keeps that part from moving).
Then apply the force (or the weight) on the other side of the gauge. Apply the force in the direction indicated by the arrow (so arrow pointing down when measuring a weight, a force created by the gravity). The output resistance will change with the amount of deflection due to the force. The resistance can be measured with a precision ADC or a Wheatstone bridge.

Strain gauges can be used in projects to measure force, weight, pressure or mechanical tension.
Keep in mind that strain gauges doesn't produce instantaneous result, metal deflection takes several seconds to get its final deflection (see our french article).

This is a 5 Kg Strain Gauge. This products also exists in 1 Kg, 10 Kg, and 20 Kg version.
We do recommend to select a sensor that can support twice as much the desired max force/weight.

Important notice: load cells sensors must be calibrated with known weights once installed!

This product requires a load cell / Strain Gauge amplifier (like HX711) to work.
