Stranded silicon wire 26AWG
Super-flexible wire with silicone insulation yet tough! Capable of withstanding temperatures up to 200°C and 600 V, this type of wire will do its job and make wires with PVC insulation look like wimps.
These wires are particularly popular in wearable projects because they are extremely soft and flexible. The wires with PVC insulation are not always able to adapt to all these curves and reversals required by the wearable projects... the wires with silicone insulations will be very comfortable there.
Supplied in sections of 2 meters of red wire. This wire is multi-stranded in 26AWG, the outer diameter of the cable is 1.5mm.
What is this AWG?
If you have already touched a little on electrical installations, you know that the cable sections are expressed in mm² (square millimeter). In a house, we very commonly find 2.5mm² and 1.5mm². It is not uncommon to find a section of 0.75mm² for your bedside lamp. 0.5mm² is prohibited on an electrical network installation... (perhaps a low voltage electric garland?).
At MCHobby, we sell 0.5mm² section cable. In electronics, 0.5mm² is already a big cable... you can use it to carry current for a small robotic platform, or a voltage of 12V with a higher current (for your LED strips).
You will certainly have noticed that the wires used in electronic prototyping assemblies are still really thin... so thin that we no longer express their section in mm² but in AWG! Be careful though, the thinner the cable, the greater the voltage drop will be when you see a significant current flowing through it. These sections are suitable for currents < 10mA... but if you need to pass a few hundred mA or more then opt for a larger cable.
The thinnest wire is 44 AWG (0.0020mm²) and the thickest is 22 AWG (0.332mm²).
A 26 AWG wire is quite common and corresponds to a cable with a section of 0.128mm², it offers a linear resistance of 135 Ohms/Km (at 20°C).
You will probably also come across 30 AWG (0.05mm²) wire, which is thinner than 26 AWG. As expected, the linear resistance of 30 AWG, ~320 Ohms/Km, is significantly higher than for 26 AWG wire.
