Pico 2 Wireless controler board with 3 modules DIN enclosure

MyDin is a project that allows Makers to create their own solutions from DIN enclosures and here is the controller board (the brain) of a 3-modules DIN enclosure.

This enclosure contains a controller based around a Pico 2W with an user interface. The JSTPH7 connector is used to connect the controler to a backplane board (not included, select one among the various backplanes availables).
Selecting the backplane board allows you to create a solution matching your project. This is made possible thanks to a "standardized" connector between the controller board and the backplane board.

Experienced users can even create their own backplane board using a prototyping board.

The controler features:

  • A real time clock
  • 4 user buttons
  • 4 user LEDs
  • 1 status LED
  • 1 reset button
  • 1 buzzer

The controller also offers various interfaces to easily add sensors and expansion:

  • Qwiic connector: carry an I2C bus. It allows you to connect sensors from SparkFun or Adafruit (where it is known as StemmaQt).
  • OneWire connector: very practical for connecting a DS18B20 temperature probe.
  • UEXT connector: Carries a 3V3 power supply, the I2C bus accompanied by an SPI bus and an UART. Since the SPI bus and the UART are not initialized, it is also possible to use those 6 pins as regular GPIO for input/output/PWM. This very robust connector have a 2.54mm connector padding, so it is very easy to connect Dupont wires for you to do some prototyping. There are also sensors and interfaces using the UEXT interface (see Olimex hardware).

The controler board do have a complete MicroPython library with a great documentation for writing MicroPython solution in procedural or asynchronous way (Asynchronous = cooperative multitasking). The library also contains some useful classes and functions to manage hysteresis (used in thermostats), software PID, a scheduler to schedule jobs, support for DS18B20 temperature sensor, etc.
The library is designed such a way that it would integrates the backplane features inside the controler object. It is very convenient and it greatly improves the code readability (see the tutorial section).

Documentation includes schematic and many technical data. Advanced user could even create their own end-to-end software solution.

Thanks to MicroPython, it is quite easy to program the controler with Thonny IDE, just connect the Pico on your computer (the microUSB port is accessible).

The backplane interface connector do ship the following signals:

Pin Direction Description
1 Power GND
2 Power +5V, MCU VSYS
3 Input IN1, A1
4 Input IN2
5 Output OUT1
6 Output OUT2
7 Output OUT3

Important notice: This product can work alone (without backplane) but we do strongly recommend the usage of a 3 modules backplane to get a fully functional product.

Qu'est-ce que UEXT ?

UEXT connector

UEXT is a connector carrying I2C bus + SPI bus + Serial + 3.3v power. It use a very standard 10 Pin IDC connector. It is quite easy to add sensors and extension board with UEXT connector... just plug it or wire it with IDC ribbon! Great.

Our favorite is the carrying of I2C bus allowing to easily add several sensors and expansion board. On the other side, SPI would be welcome for fast data transmission like remote screen. The serial connexion could be made compatible with RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, DMX512, MIDI by using appropriate level-shifting circuitery.

This connector is usually available on almost Olimex's product including nano computers. It is a great way to add extension boards on products like ESP8266 WiFi microcontroler or microcontroler board. UEXT is suited for prototyping, school learning (no need for iron) and industrial solution (Olimex produces Industrial Grade boards).

See our UEXT expansion or all products exposing UEXT connector on the shop, the Olimex's UEXT collection, Wikipedia to learn more about UEXT.

High voltage and prototyping

MyDin is prototyping equipment, not to be confused with certified electrical installation equipment.

MyDin is not intended to control devices on the electrical network (although some backplanes are technically capable of doing so).
In any case, keep in mind that voltages higher than 24V DC or 48V AC may be the cause of electric shock, serious burns, or even death in the most serious cases! Therefore, always make sure you have someone with the appropriate expertise on hand.

Content

For each order, you will receive a 3 modules Din enclosure with MB3Pico controler (tested and assembled).
The backplane interface câble is included, the button extender + plunger are also included as well as the acrylic facade.
Please note that opening over the UEXT connecteur is not as large as the connecteur (to avoids dust invasion). However, it is large enough to allow a Qwiic/StemmaQt cable to pass through!

The StemmaQt cable and backplane are not included but you can easity find them on the shop.
