The infrared LEDs are used in televison's remote control (there is a little LED in the part you point to the TV) and for the night vision cameras. These little infrared LEDs are very powerful, works on the wavelength of 940nm (used by most receivers but not visible for the eye) and has a beam / cone of illumination of 20°. They are really great to make any type of remote.
You can used them to make a intervalometer with your camera. These are the same LEDs used in TV-B-Gone. You can illuminated them continuously with a current of 100mA (for night vision) or realize remote control applications using a 1Amp pulse train. For power applications, we recommend to use of a MOSFET transistor of power like this one or a ILR88721
