OLED monochrome display - 1.0" for mobile project
These displays are small, only 1.0'' (2.54cm) diagonal, but very easy to read thanks to the high contrast of the OLED technology. This display is made up of 128x64 individual OLED pixels. Each of these pixels can be turned on/off by the controller.
Such a display does not require backlighting because it produces its own light. This reduces the energy consumption necessary for the function of an OLED and that is why it has such great contrast.
It's for these crisp little details that OLED screens are so popular!
The control circuit is an SSD1306 only capable of communicating via SPI. It will therefore take 4 or 5 pins to communicate with this display.
The OLED screen requires a 3.3V power supply and 3.3V communication logic. AdaFruit had included a 3.3V voltage regulator and all pins have a level shifter, meaning this display is safe for use with 5V microcontrolers!
The screen consumption is directly related to the number of pixels lit on the display. As average, consider a current of 20mA with a 3.3V power supply. The OLED driver circuit is a simple "capacitance-based energy storage pump" that transforms the voltage of 3.3-5V to the higher voltage required to activate the OLED pixels.
AdaFruit offers tutorial for Arduino including library and example cpde tp drive this SSD1306 OLED display (see the Tutorial section). The tutorial explains how to draw text and graphics. The OLED can also be controled from Raspberry Pi (see Tutorial).
You will need a microcontroler with more than 512 bytes/bytes of RAM (since this screen must be buffered into memory). The library can display text, bitmap images, pixels (point), rectangles, circles and lines.
