Add a GPS on the Raspberry-Pi - Localization and universel time available from the FPIO
Here, it's 10 o'clock at night... and do you know where your Raspberry-Pi is? Oops, I forgot... you don't know yet but you realize an embedded project and you need to follow its movements.
If you add this HAT GPS, you will be able to answer this question! This new Adafruit HAT is based on the famous Ultimate GPS we know well at MCHobby. A great tool to add accurate clock and geolocation on your Raspberry.
Here is some information about the GPS module:
- Sensitivity of -165dBm, update frequency of 10Hz, 66 channels
- A consumption of only 20mA
- An integrated Real Time Clock (RTC) - a location for a CR1220 battery (to keep the time for up to 7 years... even the Raspberry-Pi turns off!)
- A PPS output signal (indicating GPS fix/sync), connected by default to pin #4
- An integrated antenna (patch antenna) that works perfectly in outdoor use + a µ.FL connector for an active external antenna that allows to use the HAT indoors or environment that doesn't offer clear access to the sky.
- The status LED Fix flashes when you have GPS synchronization, which lets you know that the GPS is able to indicate you the current coordinates.
Adafruit based its HAT on its famous Ultimate GPS, add a support for the button battery (for the RTC clock), makes a break-out of all unused Raspberry-Pi pins (so available for your own use) and a large prototyping surface to allow you to add LEDs, sensors and others.
Uses the Raspberry-Pi UART
This HAT uses the hardware serial connection (UART) of the Raspberry-Pi to send and receive data and communicate with the GPS module. If you use the RX/TX pins with a console cable then you will not be able to use this HAT. You can use an HDMI or composite + keyboard + mouse monitor to connect to your Pi. More experienced users will opt for an SSH connection. See the tutorial section for more information on this HAT.
Delivered fully assembled and tested GPS + CARD and a 2x20 GPIO connector (not welded). A few small welding operations will allow you to attach the GPIO connector to the HAT (operations accessible to beginners). You can also leave the 2x20 connector besides and opt for a 2x20 Stacking Header, which would allow you to connect a GPIO cable, Pi Cobbler PLUS or another HAT.
This HAT doesn't include the 12mm button battery! A CR1220 battery will allow you to use the real-time clock functionality of the HAT GPS.
Raspberry Pi not included.
