Octocam - the Pi Zero Wireless Project kit for time lapses or surveillance
Do you want to create a remote surveillance camera looking at the bird feeding or compacte CCTV camera in your house for cat/dog or time lapse recording of plant growing?
The octocam is the perfect product for this! You can place it on your desk or on the kitchen window.
This kit contains the necessary items (see "content" section) to create a Pi Zero W based remote camera or time lapses recorder. The assembly instructions should help you to assemble the project (around 30 minutes as mentionned by supplier). You will need to add your own SD card.
OctoCam uses a very compact Pi Zero camera (a kind of spy camera). The camera module is based on the same 5 megapixels sensor as the first Pi camera, so the camera works out of the box as any Raspberry Pi Camera. The cable and circuitry is assembled on the camera ribbon, simply plug the ribbon on your Pi Zero W.
As the camera works like any official PiCamera, you can use the command line utilities, PiCam python library or C code. You can also use the motionEyeOS with the Camera.
motionEyeOS software
Add your own microSD card to setup the motionEyeOS software. MotionEyeOS makes it easy to setup the OctoCam as a remote camera. You can monitor it with any connected web browser. motionEyeOS has all sorts of software trigger to capture photos and videos when motion is detected, create time lapses, send tweet and notifications. motionEyesOS can also automatically synchronize images Google drive or Dropbox.
About WiFi configuration
Using the OctoCam with motionEyeOS connected on the house's WiFi networks requires a bit of extra configuration. The full details are available in the motionEyeOS tutorial (Pimoroni, English).
